Most software categories are crowded because they're easy to enter. Regulated ones aren't. Every compliance requirement that makes a product harder to build is a wall around the market for whoever builds it anyway. When your competitor set is filtered down to teams willing to engineer real access control, real encryption coverage, and real audit trails, the field thins dramatically.
Compliance compounds; features don't
A feature can be copied in a quarter. A compliance posture — the architecture, the audit history, the operational discipline, the trust accumulated with cautious buyers — takes years and can't be faked through a sales cycle. Schools and healthcare-adjacent businesses don't switch vendors casually, precisely because vetting is expensive. Hard to win, harder to lose.
The discipline transfers

Building tamper-evident audit logs for education made healthcare auditability a known problem. Regulated engineering is a muscle: every project strengthens the next, and the same rigor quietly raises the floor on our unregulated products too.
